How High is the Lake and Can I Get Under the Bridge?

Post by Ken Waller » Mon May 15, 2017 4:13 pm

With the snow-melt and recent rains, the lake level has risen significantly: Today (15 May 17) it is currently 35 cm (about 14") above the historical average for this date. The clearance under the Road 38 bridge is only about 43".

For up-to-date info, go to the Mississippi Valley Conservation Authority site ( http://mvc.on.ca/water-levels-app/build/generate.php ), select Sharbot Lake and click on Submit. You will be shown the level of the lake given in metres above sea level (MASL). By comparing the data, you can see if the water level is increasing or decreasing and by how much it differs from the historical average.

To determine the clearance under the Road 38 bridge:
-take the level and subtract it from 193.4, the height above sea level, in metres, of the underside of the bridge.
(for 15 May 17 that would be 193.40 - 192.30 = 1.10 metres.
-To get the clearance in inches, multiply by 39.37 (For 15 May 17, that becomes 1.10 x 39.37 = 43.3")

Please note that these are approximate measurements that don't take into effect wave action. It is your responsibility to ensure clearance before attempting to travel under the bridge.

I will provide occasional updates in the Reply section for those who don't want to do the math.

It is still 31 cm (~12") above the historical average for the 17th of May.
The clearance under the Road 38 bridge is approx 45"

It's Fri 19 May and good news, maybe, for those of you coming to the lake for the weekend. The lake dropped another 2 cm over night. That makes 17 cm that it has dropped since the peak height on May 10th.

The clearance under the Road 38 bridge is approx 46.5 inches. Please note that these are approximate measurements that don't take into effect wave action. It is your responsibility to ensure clearance before attempting to travel under the bridge.

Happy Victoria Day weekend everyone.

It's now the 25th of June (6 months to Christmas :-) ) and the lake level has continued to drop.
It is now 45 cm (18 in) below the high level of May 10th.
Clearance under the Road 38 bridge is now approx 57 inches, this despite the rain we've had.

Have a great Canada day weekend.
