General Newsletter - June 2011
I've been re-reading my message from last year and what a
contrast it has been this year. Last year we came into
spring with no snow in March and warm temperatures and
gentle breezes. The ice was out...

This year has already become unique: a mild, almost snowless non-winter and a spring that has had better weather than last summer bode well for ideal conditions to enjoy the paradise that is Sharbot Lake...

As I come to the end of my term as President of the Sharbot
Lake Property Owners’ Association I want to use this space
to reflect a bit and to encourage active participation in
the Executive, in roles such as Area Representatives, and as
active volunteers supporting Association events (fish fry)
or goals (Lake Stewards)...

General Newsletter - June 2006
As we head into the Summer of 2006 I will use the
opportunity of this Newsletter to highlight a few of the
contributions of your Association over the past year.
First, I observed at the Annual General Meeting in 2005 that
the Sharbot Lake Property Owners’ Association has been
changing its orientation over some years now from social
events to communications support. This change results in
some measure from the lack of volunteers to handle the
social events, but also from the growing legal risks that
attend events such as the fishing derby.

Do we, as an Association want to continue the efforts of
assessing water quality, maintaining an effective lake
stewardship role, conduct business with the Township as an
effective unified voice on local issues that effect our
specific interests or should each of us go our separate ways
and let the chips fall as they may?

The SLPOA Executive has had a very busy six months. Notably, our Tax Committee (SLPOA VP Rem Westland and an enthusiastic group of fellow citizens) has become an effective and recognized voice in Central Frontenac on Taxation issues. With talk of more increases in next year’s budget we owe this group a huge vote of thanks. They have put together an excellent web site (www.slpoa.ca/taxcommittee) and I encourage you to correspond with Rem and his group if you have any comments.

December 2003
There have been some significant events since our June newsletter and I hope you will enjoy this update. The major issue we have been dealing with is Municipal Taxes. Rem Westland (our VP) and a group of dedicated volunteers have met regularly to consider this complex issue, form a consensus view and form a strategy to influence the responsible entities. You’ll find an update in this newsletter. Your executive have been busy with many other issues that affect all the property owners in the Sharbot Lake vicinity so read on and don’t hesitate to contact any one of us.

I don’t know about you but, by the time April rolled around, I
was sick and tired of snow and below freezing temperatures. This
winter was long and cold (some would say like they always used
to be) and I’m sure you’ll join me in welcoming the 2003 cottage
season with a little bit of extra enthusiasm. Now if only all
this rain would stop.

January 2003
Well – it was just six months ago that I attended my first SLPOA
Executive meeting as a novice Property Representative (Area A).
As a newcomer to the lake (we purchased a cottage in fall 2000)
I was excited to be joining an organization that I knew would be
dynamic and worthwhile – plus I had been assured that I may even
get treated to a “refreshment” or two. After some initial
introductions we got right down to business and it became
obvious to yours truly that the dedicated SLPOA executive team
were looking for some fresh blood to help out with the various
tasks. As an obvious candidate, I decided to take the plunge and
volunteer to prepare the Newsletter.

The Building Code Department of the Ministry of Municipal
Affairs and Housing has issued Guidelines for septic system
re-inspection. Many municipalities are in the planning phase of
implementation including the Township of South Frontenac who
recently issued notice that they will be implementing a
re-inspection program. Likewise, other townships are
implementing similar programs that will advise homeowners of
potential problems and recommendations for remedial action.

Our body is made up of 80% of it, the earth is 60% composed of
it and many of the problems we as cottagers face are caused by
it. We need to get water into the cottage; we need to get water
out of the cottage. The water in must be clean and safe; the
water out requires special handling so that, among other things,
it does not affect the quality of the water going into the
cottage.

Well, I’m glad you asked because it’s probably a good time to
remind people of the benefits of membership in the Association.
First and foremost, the SLPOA is a representative voice of you,
the members. In times of major concerns, the association is a
focused voice speaking out to look after your interests. A
proposed trailer park and a spruce-budworm problem are two good
examples from the past where the Association intervened on your
behalf.

January 1979
My
main concern is the acceleration of the eutrophication cycle
of Sharbot Lake. Most
lakes over long periods of time, thousands of years will gradually eutrophy (that is poorer water quality) even from natural
causes. What man does is shorten this eutrophication
cycle from thousands of years to less than a hundred years. However,
this does not have to follow if careful
planning and programs are instituted. In
fact, the eutrophication cycle can even be reversed through
careful programs. What Sharbot Lake Property Owners
Association would like to see is the eutrophication
cycle be extended and even reversed
if at all possible. We are not against development and even
would like to have more people enjoy
what we have, providing our environment is not jeopardized. Thus,
we want to be sure that the necessary planning has been done, and assured that
the eutrophication cycle will not be accelerated.
